Description
Our Ready Readers program provides senior kindergarten to Grade 1 students an opportunity to practice their reading and literacy skills in a fun and supportive learning environment. Volunteers will participate in group games and lead small groups of three to four children in reading and literacy activities.

As a Ready Reader Buddy, you will encourage reluctant or struggling readers to participate in reading and literacy games, build a positive rapport and offer reading strategies. Ready Reader volunteers want to share their love of reading with children and are willing to provide children with meaningful learning experience.

Training / Work Condtions

Training Details: Orientation to Kitchener Public Library
Review of appropriate guidelines and procedures
Volunteers will receive role-specific training on or before their first shift; attendance is mandatory
Working Conditions: Start conversations; interact with children in a friendly and positive manner
Read together; play literacy-based games and activities
Explain reading strategies and concepts when needed
Provide encouragement and support
Handle attention or learning challenges in a positive manner
Act as a positive role model for children
Ask staff questions when needed
Transportation: On a bus route
