   About the Position

Impact Statement
United for Literacy (formerly Frontier College) is a national charitable literacy organization. We believe literacy is a right. We work with volunteers and community partners to give people the skills and confidence they need to reach their potential.

Literacy is recognized as a human right and a driving force to empowerment and prosperity. United for Literacy leads the effort in Canada to help people and communities reach their full potential through the power of literacy.

Description
Developed to address the needs of grade 3-12 newcomer & refugee children from East Africa & immigrants in Waterloo Region, volunteers work in small groups, helping with math, science, reading & writing.

Run In partnership with the Somali Canadian Association of Waterloo Region (SCAWR).

The program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30pm-8:30pm September to June.

Age: 18+ English Proficiency, Confidentiality

Training / Work Condtions

Training Details: All United for Literacy volunteer tutors are required to attend:
1) attend a 15-minute volunteer tutor interview (online)
2) a mandatory 2.5-hour new volunteer tutor training session Sat. January 17 or 24 10:00am-12:30pm (online).
3) Valid Police Check (no older than 6 months) or complete a Backcheck.

Working Conditions: In person at Hillside Public School, 11 Chopin Drive Kitchener.

Transportation: On a bus route


Time Commitment

Duration: 3 months or less
Weekday - Evening
Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings, 6:30pm-8:30pm Sept. to June. Volunteers are only required to volunteer one night/week but are welcome to tutor both nights if your schedule allows.
